Lipoly battery packs for the X-UFO

From UfoWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The original Silverlit X-Ufo requires a power supply rated at 12VDC voltage and above 6Amps continuous current. Lipo batteries feature a typical voltage of about 3.7V. Therefore a pack of 3 cells connected in series is needed.

[edit] Weight

The weight of the battery pack should not exceed that of the original NiMH pack supplied with the kit (~75g). However, a battery weight of up to 100g is still feasable.

[edit] Size

The size of the pack may vary - according to available cells - whlist most users like the Lipo pack to fit into the original battery cage supplied with the X-Ufo. This means the pack size may not exceed 50x30x20mm (LxWxH). Remember the 3-cell-rule! So the figure of hight refers to a stack of 3 cells!

[edit] Capacity

The original X-Ufo will operate for less than 5min on the original NiMH pack. To extend the flight time, at least 600mAh should be considered. Especially for users looking for longer training flights, a 1200mAh pack should be considered. For general purposes a pack in the 900mAh range has been used with great success.

[edit] Additional considerations

Battery packs with a low capacity ( < 500mAh) need to be tested for sufficient continuous current! A minimum of 6A sould e available even for extended periods of time. Therefore, the current rating of the cells must be taken into consideration. A 600mAh 10C cell will only supply 6A of continuous current and is therefore at the low edge of the usefull products list. For speedy performance an even smaller pack may be considered. In this case a rating of 20C or more will be needed. Since ratings above 10C are usually optimistic at best, the pack in question should be tested before high-amp action is performed.
